Not long before Christmas, I was talking with a young dad in Kidsgrove about how stretched family life has felt over the past few years. He and his wife are working hard and doing everything right, yet for a long time it seemed as though the system was making life harder, not easier. Against a backdrop of high mortgage rates and soaring energy bills, caused by a decade of Conservative failure, they have felt as though they were running to stand still. What stayed with me was not frustration, but a quiet sense of relief — relief that things are finally starting to move in the right direction.

That feeling is one I hear often across Stoke-on-Trent North and Kidsgrove. People here are resilient, hardworking and proud of where they come from. They do not expect quick fixes or grand promises. What they want is fairness. To know that effort counts, and that life becomes a little easier to manage. That is exactly what this Labour Government is focused on delivering.

As we move through 2026, those changes are beginning to show in everyday life through practical improvements that make a real difference to families.

Take free breakfast clubs. These are already helping children arrive at school fed and ready to learn, while easing pressure on household budgets. For parents, that means less stress in the mornings and real savings at the end of the week. For schools, it means children better prepared to learn. It is a simple idea, but one that is already making a difference locally.

Support for working parents is also being strengthened through the expansion of free childcare. For many families, childcare costs have been one of the biggest barriers to work and a major source of stress. Extending free childcare hours means parents can return to work, increase their hours, or simply have greater flexibility — without facing impossible choices.

From April, local people will also see a £150 reduction in their energy bills. After years of volatility and rising costs, this will make a difference to household finances — particularly for those who have been hit hardest by the cost-of-living crisis. It is another example of Labour focusing on practical action that people will feel directly.

Transport is another area where people are starting to see progress. In Stoke-on-Trent and Kidsgrove, buses matter. They connect people to jobs, education, healthcare and each other. For too long under the Conservatives, unreliable services and shrinking routes made everyday journeys harder and more expensive.

That is why securing more than £70 million to improve bus services across our area is so important. This investment is helping to protect routes, improve reliability and keep fares affordable. For local people, it means more independence and the confidence that public transport will be there when they need it.

Work itself is also becoming fairer and more secure. Stoke-on-Trent has always been built on hard work — from the pits and the pots to today’s public services, logistics, manufacturing and emerging technologies. A higher minimum wage is now putting more money into the pockets of the lowest-paid workers, while new employment rights will soon take effect, strengthening sick pay, introducing day-one rights and tackling insecure working practices. Together, these changes give workers greater security and dignity, helping families plan ahead with more confidence.

The young dad I spoke to in Kidsgrove was right to hope for better. Raising a family should not feel like a constant uphill struggle. By focusing on fairness, stability and practical support, Labour is making life easier for families and helping build a future where hard work truly pays.

My commitment is simple. I will continue to work alongside this Labour Government to make sure Stoke-on-Trent North and Kidsgrove feel the benefits of these changes, so our communities can look ahead with confidence and optimism about the future.
