Recently, David joined the rededication of the grave and the laying of a new cross for First World War soldier Private Alfred William Holdcroft at Burslem Cemetery.
Alfred, from Burslem, survived the Somme but later died from his wounds. After years of his grave remaining unmarked, this ceremony helped to right that wrong and properly honour his sacrifice.
It was an honour and a privilege for David to read the citation and deliver the Kohima Epitaph as part of the commemoration. He thanked Mike Lightfoot for his dedication in helping bring forward this fitting and long-overdue tribute.
“When you go home, tell them of us and say,
For your tomorrow, we gave our today.”
